...Renny made some comment that had to do with the way things had come out. His voice was a throaty roaring as Doc Savage listened to it.
      That roaring! It might have been a forewarning of what the future held, an omen of the terror and mystery and awful destruction that was to come; an advance echo, as it were, of the fantastic, eerie thing that was to give Doc Savage and his aides some of their most grisly minutes. The Roar Devil!
      The Roar Devil--they heard it first in the mountains of New York State. Sound of it defied those terror-stricken souls who tried to describe it. And the earth trembled, heaving as from tread of a solar colossus, and dams burst, and men died.
      The Roar Devil. They heard it. They felt it. But it was never seen. Or was it? Hideous, inexplicable things had happened to certain men in a position to discover this fantastic horror.
      But Renny, not having been gifted with the ability to fathom what the future held, went on with his roaring-voiced conversation...
